STUDY | POLICE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH

Police violence is a leading cause of death for young men in the United States according to a 2019 study. Over the life course, about 1 in every 1,000 black men can expect to be murdered by police. The risk isn't merely racial, however.

The risk of being killed by police peaks between the ages of 20 y and 35 y for men and women and for all racial and ethnic groups.

Black women and men and American Indian and Alaska Native women and men are significantly more likely than white women and men to be killed by police. Latino men are also more likely to be killed by police than are white men according to the study.

Between the ages of 25 y and 29 y,

  • Black men are killed by police at a rate between 2.8 and 4.1 per 100,000,

  • American Indian and Alaska Native men are killed at a rate between 1.5 and 2.8 per 100,000,

  • Asian/Pacific Islander men are killed by police at a rate between 0.3 and 0.6 per 100,000,

  • Latino men at a rate between 1.4 and 2.2 per 100,000, and

  • White men at a rate between 0.9 and 1.4 per 100,000.

Do you support an organized gang mass murdering thousands of humans every year?
